Thankfully, a great year/fire season in Alberta … many thanks to the front-line fire fighters and the entire staff of the Alberta Forest Services – we are in your debt for your great work for Albertans

 DATA CENTER issues + news

+ ROHL Gateway Fiber expanding across western Canada

+ Walton Global Investments Ltd. is proposing a data centre development in the Edmonton Energy and Technology Park – seeking amendment to Area Structure Plan …

~  capacity, power, and continuity matter in a ‘huge’ way to users and therefore must matter to data center operators and their suppliers of power. Growing NIMBY reactions and government/regulators conscious of pressure on energy costs combine to make this burgeoning industry of significant concern for everyone.

+ Harvey secured a US$50.0 million investment from Ontario Teachers’ to fund it’s growth in services to the legal profession

 INFRASTRUCTURE + P3

+ Government of Alberta: details of upcoming RFP process for a private-sector proponents for high-speed rail connecting Calgary-Red Deer-Edmonton with connections to YYC and YEG and Airdrie … expecting to have a proponent selected by April 2027 – under a 30 year plan; seems like some deju-vu, because someone with one of the proponents told me, about 30 years ago, that ‘in the fullness of time’ this project would see the light of day. Don’t hold your breath … this is part of a new era in Alberta-Ottawa bargaining, but that’s a far cry from making this project financially viable without government backstopping for institutional guarantees – because infrastructure lenders back P3’s because of their lack of risk, so this won’t happen without GoA taking on the risk, or without a combination of freight hauling pod-trains which aren’t the same as 320/km/hr passenger trains flying along on new tracks in a dedicated new corridor … tic toc … and need to redefine ‘fullness of time’

+ new bridges coming in Calgary; Green line and related construction

  RETAIL + RECREATION

+ Sobeys / Empire agreed to end property controls after battle with the Competition Bureau – which raises questions for all retail landlords and anchor tenants, about their ability to enforce exclusivity clauses in leases … this issue is likely far from over in Canadian courts.

+ Starbucks to close 250 more stores in Canada and the U.S. due to unacceptable financial results in those stores; no word on which stores will be involved …
