FACILITYCalgary publisher Mark Kolke, in conversation with Rick Andison

January 8, 2013

My recent conversation, with Rick Andison, Vice-President, Development at Devitt & Forand Contractors Inc. – born near Mayo Landing, Yukon, raised in Red Deer, CET from NAIT and a long career in construction. Little known by many, he has an encyclopedic knowledge of heavy metal music – he might be called Mr. Rock & Roll . . .

How did he get started?
The year he turned 5, a wooden mandarin orange box and a kids tool set began interest that led to a construction industry job on his 20th birthday.

I asked Rick how he sees the market, in his industry, over the next 90 days.

. . . way more positive than negative, continued skilled labour shortages

Over the next 5 years?

… continued success of the company through working with our customers to focus on what we do well – and continued shortages of skilled labour. We need to get better at attracting people into the construction trades. Continued employee involvement in the ownership will help us retain quality people.

What qualities distinguish your preferred suppliers?

. . . low price doesn’t equal credibility. I look for keen bidding, reliability, reputation and capacity for listening

Why do your clients hire you instead of your competitors?

. . . consistency, experience, deliver – and we facilitate problem solving through consultation to deliver fair value.

What are you reading?

. . . The Art of War by Sun-Tzu

His ride?

. . . 2006 Honda Element

Thanks Rick.
