  COMMENTARY + argument

+ the Stelmach government adjusted royalty rates for the oil & gas industry, again, in efforts to stimulate exploration investment in response to ongoing industry lobbying for the changes. With 277 or 550 rigs operating in Alberta today it appears to be a right-headed move. Dubbed the Emerging Resource and Technologies Initiative, it will be reviewed in 2014

+ Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke continues to paint a rosy picture of an American economy recovering without European meltdown; the Fed is predicting U.S. GDP growth of 3.2-3.7% this year.  Markets aren’t agreeing with him as investors flee stocks for government bonds and gold. Employment indicators (down) suggest that the market, once again, has a better handle on the economy than the Fed Chair

+ kudos to Jamie Kureluk who shot a world professional record 9 hole score of 25 enroute to winning the RBC Alberta Open held at Carnmoney

+ the Government of Canada is under fire for its plan to spend $930 million on security for upcoming G-8 and G-20 conferences being held at two locations in Ontario at nearly the same time; rightly so, Auditor General Sheila Fraser will have a look after she’s done examining MPs expenses but, sadly, all that cash will be spent before we get to find out what it’s been spent on

  INFRASTRUCTURE / P3

+ Aecon awarded $19-million contract to widen 407 ETR (Ontario)

+ City of Calgary opened $450 million Pine Creek waste water treatment facility

+ construction underway on next section of Highway 63 twinning north of Wandering River; 18 kilometres of work  - $17.8 million scheduled to be completed by fall 2011

- MacDonald was aged 80 when, for he first time in his life, he walked into his golf club bar and ordered drinks for everyone. “What's the occasion, mon?" enquired the stunned bartender. "Hole in one?"  "No," the old highlander replied, "I've just married a bonnie lass!" It was seven months later when MacDonald again strode into the bar and again ordered drinks all round.  "And what are we celebrating this time?" asked the amazed bartender. "Tis the wife, lad, she's just presented me with a baby boy."  "But you've only been married seven months!"  "Tis true, 'tis true! Imagine it - two under par and me with a whippy shaft!"
