INFRASTRUCTURE/P3/GREEN/LEED

+ Federal Government agency PPP Canada may be asked to fund 3 recreation centres in SE Calgary as the City of Calgary only has funds to capitalize one . . . stay tuned

+ TransAlta Corp. has begun testing its new $1.9 billion Keephills 3 (450 megawatts) generating station

+ Mayor Nenshi really wants the airport underpass project revisited (see his Jan 7 op-ed pieces in the Calgary Herald); the closing of Barlow Trail to make way for new runway construction will cause hardships for business, hotels in particular, and changing traffic patterns will make life for everyone inconvenient. The question remains whether we can afford it and whether council will agree to fund it . . to say nothing of where the funds will come from (the Provincial and Federal Governments have already declined to help) . . .

COMMENTARY

+ with oil prices poised to cross the $100/barrel threshold, one has to wonder whether the predicted $180 billion in oilsands over the next decade will translate to a rosier picture in Calgary – both for the economy generally and for commercial real estate values; so far, it looks like people focused on oil, not gas – focused local, are drinking the kool-aid. For those watching troubled financial circumstances in Europe and south of the 49th are less optimistic.
