NEWS SUMMARY
 Sept. 22 ~ 29 / 2020

Alberta COVID-19 stats: 265 deaths, 1,549 active cases of 17,749 cases to date: aggregate Alberta data – currently, 63 Albertans are in the hospital with COVID-19, and 15 of those are in intensive care units – it looks like the second-wave in Alberta is feared, as Ontario and Quebec are now experiencing a third-wave case spike …

Alberta did a Stage 2 relaunch, re-opening Stage 3 remains delayed because of case/infection levels; school openings are causing concern as outbreaks at schools have left parents and neighbours jittery … tic toc

Alberta’s TIER fund is now emptied$52.0 million into new emissions projects; now the entire $750.0 million invested for emission-reduction ventures

ABTraceTogether – get the APP; GOA has launched an app which, if loaded on your phone, enables contact tracing in the event you or someone you’ve been near contracts COVID-19; this is something we should all consider getting on-board

A2A Rail project is getting some good press; the project, to take a rail line from northern Alberta to Alaskan tidewater is a very ambitious project; $22.0 billion freight/rail project is getting wind in its sails from Alberta Premier Kenny and U.S. President Trump saying approving words; Trump announced he will sign presidential border-crossing permit – so it seems all that’s left is regulatory processes in two countries and raising all that money …

Bird Construction Inc. completed its acquisition of Stuart Olson Inc.

Calfrac – the saga continues like a nighttime soap-opera miniseries: Calfrac are now proposing an Amended Recapitalization Transaction, a revised shareholder and noteholder meetings date with the inference that CCAA process will ensue if the transaction is not approved; in response, no surprise, a rebuttal from Wilks Brothers reiterating their proposal is best for shareholders, and heaping on with a Top Ten list – if you can’t get a chuckle or two out of this, then you need to get out more… tic toc

Calgary FALL 2020 – Calgary tenant’s (retail, office, industrial)  – please respond to our Lease Sentiment Survey

Canada’s parliament opening throne speech contained much to please the east, appease the NDP, and not one word about Alberta oil & gas … a telling sign of Alberta-unfriendly sentiment in the Prime Minister’s Office, which seems to disappoint all Albertans, and fuels anti-Ottawa sentiment and separatist rumblings; clearly Alberta needs a ‘made in Alberta’ solution to its problems – and that won’t come without costs for us all, but methinks we are up for that fight

Canada – U.S. border to remain closed to non-essential traffic until at least October 21st

Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) released an IPSOS poll showing priorities; 44% say the economy is #1, 64% feel oil & natural gas are key to Canada’s recovery

Cequence Energy Ltd. completed its plan of compromise and arrangement; have emerged from CCAA proceedings – new board in place

Crown Capital Partners Inc. acquired Galaxy Broadband Communications Inc.

current energy prices; live link to current Bloomberg energy prices / OilPrice.com; crude back at US$40-ish/bbl, Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict unsettling traders, while optimism over a new U.S. stimulus package before Nov. 3rd elections is buoying markets …

Devon Energy Corp. agreed to acquire WPX Energy Inc. for US$2.56 billion

Dye & Durham Limited agreed to acquire Property Information Exchange Ltd. for $53.0 million

Foothills Medical Centre postponing surgeries due to virus outbreak, 5 units impacted by COVID-19; 26 patients and 27 health care workers at Foothills have tested positive

GMP Capital Inc. and Richardson Financial Group Limited have reached a settlement agreement which will allow their consolidation transaction to go forward

HOUSING TRUTH – monthly residential newsletter: HOUSING TRUTH – CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP for our mailing list  – September Issue

Husky’s West White Rose offshore project remains idle; last week’s throne speech promise of $320.0 million in help from Ottawa hasn’t done the trick …

Inter Pipeline Ltd. agreed to sell a major portion of its European bulk liquid storage unit to CLH Group for $715.0 million

Inter Pipeline Ltd. agreed to acquire Milk River Pipeline System in a deal with Plains Midstream Canada ULC; Inter Pipeline gets $35.0 million, and 100 % of the Milk River System, while Plains gets 100% of Empress II straddle plant and 50% of Empress V straddle plant

Just Energy Group Inc. completed its recapitalization transaction and plan of arrangement

Keyera Corp. resumed stalled operations at its Wapiti Gas Plant; unplanned outage began August 17, 2020

PROPERTYlines;  – monthly commercial real estate newsletter  CLICK HERE to CHECK OUT THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dancehall, the brainchild of its late founder Harris Dvorkin, long a fixture on Macleod Trail, will be no more; the building is still there, now for lease; BMO are in control and in the news this week as owners of ‘saddles and memorabilia on loan’ had a skirmish or two to get their gear back; word is the courts, the receiver, and or BMO relinquished claim on 50 years of accumulate rodeo cowboy gear
