 THIS WEEK - NEWS SUMMARY

 September 20 ~ 26 / 2023

September 26, 2023 issue – includes items received up to our 7:30AM MT deadline

+ 24th World Petroleum Congress last week had 5,000 delegates/10,000 visitors from 111 countries

+ Alberta wildfire status: 83 wildfires still burning in Alberta, 2 still out of control

+ Cenovus Energy secured $7.0 million in funding from the Government of Alberta to study how small modular reactors could be used in oilsands operations – GoA release

+ current energy prices; live links to Bloomberg energy prices / OilPrice.com; WTI @ US$89/bbl, Brent @ US$92/bbl; forecasts of US$100/bbl are credited with being part of the pricing run-up as supply tightens while demand rises …

+ E.coli outbreak in Calgary update: GoA have gone silent again – latest update was Sept. 19 … with no news on investigation into the cause, the worst outbreak of E.coli in Canada since Walkterton!

+ FACILITYCalgary, a sponsor-supported FREE weekly newsletter; ‘send time’ is early every Tuesday; Calgary news focused on oil & gas, finance and the real estate industry; click here to sign up

+ Genesis Land Development Corp. acquired 460 acres for residential development for $25.8 million

+ Gibson Energy Inc. entered into a 15-year renewable power purchase agreement with Capstone Infrastructure Corporation and Sawridge First Nation's Buffalo Atlee 2 and 4 wind farms

+ Government of Alberta – a government task force led by Jim Dinning as the background for the announcement of plans for Alberta to exit the Canada Pension Plan; the numbers [Alberta would take 53% of the CPP assets, $334.0 billion] are widely criticized for being untenable, and criticism will get lot of ink; watchers are seeing this as a chess-move in a wider broadside against Ottawa on environmental/jurisdictional issues – it could be just politics, but it seems to have more momentum than that notwithstanding outrageously proposed amounts that Alberta would ‘take away’, while critics will get lots of airtime too – Braid labels it a stick-up, …tic toc …

+ Government of Canada – recent announcements on GST elimination on rental housing construction have been widely reported poorly, because most people don’t understand how GST on input costs for construction of rental housing is paid/recovered; press has been widespread that this will contribute strongly to increased rental project development, which it might, but the impact is most likely to impact merchant developers to build and sell vs. build and hold; a great piece of understanding of the ‘not yet legislated’ policy was published by Blakes – clarity and facts, it’s a superb analysis; and, Osler published a similar analysis – both of which are great lay-person explanations of what the proposed legislative change would mean …

+ Government of Canada – parliament rocked by revelation a guest applauded/recognized in Parliament when Ukraine President Zelenskyy visited is a former Nazi; widespread coverage of the embarrassment over the blunder is focused on calls for Speaker Rota to resign the speakership. Someone made the suggestion, and someone approved it – so, who should be punished?

+ Grassy Mountain coal mining is in the news again; Northback Holdings have applied again to develop the controversial mine project notwithstanding a Ministerial Order of previous Minister Savage; such projects cannot go ahead with both provincial and federal government reviews – so those who thought they’d succeeded in stopping this controversial project are perplexed, and proponents appear to have found support from the Danielle Smith government; … tic toc …

+ Lucy Scientific Discovery Inc. acquired BlueSky Wellness Inc.; all stock transaction

+ MONDAY MORNING MINUTE - a weekly inspiration message and a selected quote in your inbox weekly; check out the new format; click here to sign up ;  click here for this week’s posting
