 CALGARY OLYMPICS 2026 BID WATCH

the bid is in great shape – or in horrible jeopardy, depending on which news report you listen to; Mayor Nenshi’s private ‘line in the sand letter – if a deal isn’t reached by Oct. 29th, he’ll cancel the plebiscite’ to the Prime Minister was leaked; every level of government has now made a commitment and the city’s commitment was also leaked. Seems like a career-limiting move for Nenshi and several members of council.

Oct. 10th Council Meeting – dealing with committee recommendation to halt the bid and cancel the plebiscite

commitments so far: IOC $1.2 billion(US$ 925.0 million) in 2026 dollars, GOA $700.0 million in 2018 dollars, Government of Canada $1.75 billion (conditional on GOA+Calgary matching that number) in 2026 dollars, City of Calgary $370.0 million (lower than the $500.0 million recommended); then add ticket sales, spin-off revenues, probably a Saddledome replacement arena, sports legacy assets, creation of an athlete’s village (to become low cost housing) – it seems there is a lot of good mo-jo here. So really, does the Mayor acting alone have the right to cancel the plebiscite if he isn’t happy?

what is all the fuss about? The Trudeau government’s $1.75 billion is conditional on Alberta and Calgary matching that number; so far they aren’t. If this deal fails there will be plenty of crap to go around for everyone’s shoes … but it is looking like a made-in-Calgary solution is needed and the Notley government isn’t coming to the party. Or, is it Calgary that is the root of the problem? It seems like a shell-game, but make no mistake: it’s a hissing-match between Trudeau and Nenshi, and Trudeau has nothing to lose. Sadly, if this whole thing blows up, Calgary is the big loser. C’mon Scott … prevail on these guys, please – we need this. Calgary needs the shot in the arm an Olympics can bring. We have the energy for it whether Mr. Nenshi, Ms. Notley or Mr. Trudeau do or do not. They are playing politics with Calgary’s destiny. Hopefully we’ll all get a chance to vote YES on Nov. 13th so we can move it along …

Stockholm bid looking shaky – so it might be: Canada-Calgary v. Italy-Milan of just Italy-Milan by default if Calgary backs away from making a bid

City of Calgary Engage/information site – details on open houses, give your feedback

City of Canmore is seeking provincial funding to augment its proposal to house athletes for the games

 coming soon: Nov. 13 plebiscite

 the bid process

Feasibility Study and Conceptual Master Hosting Plan [365 page PDF download] – presented to Calgary City Council May 31, 2017

save the date: IOC will announce the host city for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Lausanne, Switzerland, June 23rd, 2019
