NEWS SUMMARY
 May 4 ~ 11 / 2021

+ Alberta COVID-19 stats: 2,117 deaths to date, 25,438 active cases of 210,287 confirmed cases to date: aggregate Alberta data – currently, 690 Albertans are in the hospital with COVID-19, and 158 of those are in intensive care units; 4,331,220 tests have been administered to 2,090,022 Albertans to date

+ Alberta COVID-19 rate (active cases/population) is the highest in Canada; the ‘stop the spike’ measures have all taken effect …

+ Alberta COVID-19 restrictions remain in effect; Alberta’s COVID-19 cases per capita is the highest in Canada and the United States at this time; experts are calling for another full-shutdown; Premier Kenny promises a ‘package of stricter restrictions’  which he announced May 4th for a three-week clampdown

+ Alberta Vaccine program –  now finishing Phase 2

+ABTraceTogether – get the APP

+ Borden Ladner Gervais LLP acquired AUM Law Professional Corp.

+ Boulder Energy Ltd. engaged advisors to initiate a Strategic Review process

+ Kentucky Calgary Council Derby has lots of horses in this year’s races: City of Calgary 2021 elections; now there are 14 declared candidates running for mayor: Ian Chaing, Jan Damery,  Jeremy Farkas, Brad Field, Jyoti Gondek, Larry Heather, Dean Hopkins, Kevin Johnston, Zane Novak,Teddy Ogbonna, Sunny Singh, Shaoli Wang,  Grace Yan, Zac Hartley and  63 candidates so far have filed nomination papers for 14 Ward seats on our council

+ City of Calgary 200-page planning document redux-saga continues: the controversial ‘guidebook’ is being reviewed revised, and renamed – Guide For Local Area Planning is being shifted from ‘policy’ to ‘general guidance’, and while there is no clear deadline on when this will move forward, stall, or be swept under the election-year rug … tick tock

+ current energy prices; live link to current Bloomberg energy prices / OilPrice.com; crude prices up again week-over-week as U.S. stockpiles deplete, and Colonial pipeline shut-down/ransomware-cyber-hack event riled up the market a bit; meanwhile traders eyes focus on OPEC and OPEC+ in terms of production volume volatility over the horizon …

+ Enbridge Line 5: no oil spilled, but plenty of ink, plenty of noise from media, talking-heads, analysts and politicians on both sides of the Canada/U.S. border. A May 12th deadline imposed by Michigan governor Whitmer for ‘taps off’ to fulfill her ill-considered campaign promise. Her action withdrawing Line 5’s 1953 Easement rights ensnared in court-ordered mediation, rendering May 12 inconsequential in a determined tug-o-war. The notion that a state can put a necessary pipeline out of service because of a Governor’s dubious self-serving campaign promise is absurd and will be nullified by a court decision somewhere down the timeline or by the next state election tossing her out, whichever comes first. Neither Biden nor Trudeau will likely expend political capital on this. Enbridge won’t blink. Meanwhile, their tunnel-replacement project is moving along with permission from Michigan regulators, and construction will be well underway before gubernatorial elections in November 2022. Incidentally, Line 5 was built in the first place to eliminate oil-by-ship traffic on the Great Lakes …tic toc+
