 INTERESTING TRENDS IN RETAIL

+ Bed Bath & Beyond’s lifeline/rescue financing is unfolding; all Canadian stores being shuttered – but it’s interesting, when you consider HBC is bank rolling a bailout that wipes a competitor off the playing field in Canada and gives it a controlling role on the U.S. operations/brand. My prediction, we’ll see Bed Bath & Beyond stores-within-HBC stores later this year if the follow their announced Zeller’s rebirth model …

+ HBC is resurrecting its Zellers brand; will be ‘shop within a shop’ in HBC stores

+ Nordstrom will exit Canada, closing 13 stores; one Nordstrom store, one Nordstrom rack in Calgary; various opportunities and/or problems for landlord and retailers across the country - partly the economy (they are struggling in the U.S., so cutting off the Canadian division was a no-brainer for them - but as a ‘once upon a time I had a young shoe merchant’s crush on Nordstroms, long the go-to-mecca for shoe industry careers, I’m sad that they are no longer the great retailer they once were. They ‘didn’t get Canadians’, but worse, they didn’t get us into their stores – as if they were the only quality merchants here …

+ you can skip-the-uber, Chick-fil-A; they are dishing up something new for those workers who rush those deliveries, a rest-stop and ‘gets them out of the way’ of customers waiting to be seated or to get to the order counter (a pet peeve of mine)

 QUOTES

+ One day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted. Do it now. – Paul Coelho

+ The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. – Amelia Earhart

INTERESTING TRENDS IN OFFICE REAL ESTATE ...

+ do you remember the feeding frenzy, Calgary among them, to win Amazon’s HQ2 project; the winners were New York City, and Arlington, Virginia? – but the US$2.5 billion PenPlace has hit the pause-button at the initial phase; notwithstanding Amazon’s great retail dominance (oddly, with Walmart catching up!), their facility ambitions and read on ‘how they office’ is a landscape shifting beneath their feet, as it is for everyone else

+ Alberta budget speech projects at $2.4 billion surplus for 2023-24 on the heels of a projected $10.39 billion surplus for the current fiscal year, lots of spending to support UCP re-election efforts, and ongoing sleight of hand on what will flow to the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund, and a nebulous ‘contingency fund’ that’s short on details (text of Finance Minister Travis Toews speech) ~ and the lack of support for Calgary downtown rejuvenation was conspicuously absent
