+ Nordstrom will exit Canada, closing 13 stores; one Nordstrom store, one Nordstrom rack in Calgary; various opportunities and/or problems for landlord and retailers across the country - partly the economy (they are struggling in the U.S., so cutting off the Canadian division was a no-brainer for them - but as a ‘once upon a time I had a young shoe merchant’s crush on Nordstroms, long the go-to-mecca for shoe industry careers, I’m sad that they are no longer the great retailer they once were. They ‘didn’t get Canadians’, but worse, they didn’t get us into their stores – as if they were the only quality merchants here …

+ do you remember the feeding frenzy, Calgary among them, to win Amazon’s HQ2 project; the winners were New York City, and Arlington, Virginia? – but the US$2.5 billion PenPlace has hit the pause-button at the initial phase; notwithstanding Amazon’s great retail dominance (oddly, with Walmart catching up!), their facility ambitions and read on ‘how they office’ is a landscape shifting beneath their feet, as it is for everyone else
