My recent conversation, an hour with Duncan Robertson, Managing Partner at SBM Inc. :

I met Duncan several years ago while helping him lease office premises. Several transactions later . . . we are still friends who swap stories over coffee – when he entertains me with stories of his younger days globe trotting as ‘geologist’ as befits his degree from University of Western Ontario, including fruit picking, table waiting and cave-guide! When he returned to the top side of the world he spent 20+ years in oil and gas firm management until founding SBM. 

Along the way Duncan and his colleague Gil Dawson have kindly invited me to several of their client breakfast presentations where I watched their strategies, forecasts and predictions come true as they applied their forecast models to the future for oil and natural gas pricing among many other things. Looking back, I wish I’d put some serious money on the line based on what they predicted for oil, gas, gold etc . . . 

 
 
Proudest moment since starting SBM?
. . . bringing the first dollar in the door on an energy advisory business where we created the methodology for evaluating commodity price trends
 
Regrets?
… don’t have any regrets
 
How do you see the oil & natural gas markets over the next 90 days?
… volatile!
 
Over the next 5 years?
. .  more bullish on natural gas, and more bearish on crude oil
 
What qualities distinguish your preferred suppliers?
. . . customer focused and willing to accommodate SBM
 
Why do your clients hire you instead of your competitors?
. . . we’re independent. We don’t take large positions in the market place that we attempt to get our clients to buy-into. And we are not trying to get our ‘toe in the tent’ in order to extract large transactional fees down the road. And, we have excellent references . . . 
 
Your firm’s most significant unsung advantage?
. . . we are nimble, data-driven, take a systems approach, have a methodology to follow in our analyses. We don’t have to ‘toe a party line’. We call it as we see it.
 
I know you have a long involvement with rugby and hockey – what’s the history of that?
. . .  I’ve played Div. 1 club-side rugby in London Ontario, in New Zealand in Calgary. I’ve been coaching hockey for 42 years . . . coaching referees, refereeing.
